Charlie takes the water. "I don't know how long they've been down there," his avatar says. "This might mean life or death." The woman nods and races off toward the exit. Charlie heads further down, inching closer to the bottom of the cavern.
After a long hike, he's finally close - until the bright glow of the jewel is fully in sight. All around it are civilians and treasure hunters alike slumped on the floor, moaning cries of "Water" in utter exhaustion. Charlie kneels down and gives as many of them as he can drinks of water to hold them over. When the bottle is finally empty, there's nothing left to be done... except find the jewel.
The bowling bowl-sized jewel is rolled over unceremoniously near a big rock. As Charlie's avatar walks toward it, a singular click sound rings out. It's a treasure hunter, perfectly disguised against the rock floor on his back, with a rifle trained right at Charlie's face! A tense minute passes, until finally the treasure hunter waves it away and, with a grunt, kicks the jewel over to Charlie.
"You can have it, mister," he says. "As long as you come back for us!" Charlie nods and carefully picks up the jewel.
The screen pulls back, and suddenly Charlie is watching his avatar race through the cavern back to the surface, carrying the jewel like a football all the way. Huge letters swoop in as the camera pulls away. "AND THE MORAL OF THE STORY IS: HELP YOURSELF BY HELPING THOSE IN NEED."
Charlie yawns and nods his head in the direction of the blinking "Share with your friends?" prompt before pulling the headset off and dropping it on the dresser. Leaning back in bed, his eyes close, sending him into another world of dreams.
And so he drifts off to sleep, soothed by the gentle tones from the headset - still connected to the internet - as the 'Likes' come rolling in.
